Disney Princesses Who Have Mental Health Issues

I spend a lot of time thinking about the Disney Princesses, most likely because I wish I was one.

The women of Disney come with gorgeous dresses, shiny tiaras, incredible hair and enough mental illnesses to keep a team of psychiatrist employed. What, what, what??! Our innocent Disney princesses suffering from mental illness? Yup. Think about it; some of their actions make so much more sense when you assign a disorder to them.

  1. Snow White: Ah, Snow. Our sweet, adorable Snow. This delicate flower is a perfect example of Maladaptive Daydreaming, categorized by "an extensive fantasy that replaces human interaction, commonly caused by a traumatic childhood event. I think having you step-mother put a hit on you counts as 'traumatic childhood event', don't you?
  2. Cinderella: The long-suffering Cinderella seems to be suffering from a case of Perfectionism; We're talking about a woman who allowed her step mother and sisters to take her home, her possessions, even her NAME (before the Tramlines moved it was just Ella). All in a vain attempt to gain approval from a woman who made it clear from the start that she wanted nothing to do with her.
  3. Aurora: Sleeping beauty is clearly suffering from Abulia which is "a lack of will or initiative and can be seen as a disorder of diminished motivation (DDM). In other words, she simply doesn't do anything, except catch up on her beauty sleep.
  4. Ariel: Alas, our dear little mermaid wasn't struck by cupid's arrow the night she saw prince Eric, rather she seems to have been struck by Stendhal Syndrome; "a disorder that causes rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, confusion and even hallucinations when an individual is exposed to an experience of great personal significance. Hmm, sounds like love to me.
  5. Belle: While quite a few people seem to believe that Belle is suffering from Stockholm syndrome, on account of the fact she ends up marrying the man who held her captive, I prefer to think of her as afflicted with Bibliomania; a symptom of obsessive compulsive disorder which involves the collecting and even hoarding of books…wait, THAT'S a disorder?? Great, another thing to discuss with my therapist…
  6. Jasmine: Poor princess Jasmine, sixteen years trapped behind castle walls had left her with a severe case of Claustrophobia. Now that she's running her own life, I expect she takes A LOT of excursions. I would.
  7. Pocahontas:Unfortunately for the chief, his only child had a classic case of Histrionic Personality Disorder which is a long-winded way of saying she was an attention-seeker. This is evident by the nickname he gave his daughter, little mischief. Perhaps if the chief had given her a sister he wouldn't have had this problem.
  8. Mulan: Brave Mulan was afflicted with Atelophobia; the terrifying fear of not being good enough. Knowing she didn't fit the mold of a traditional Chinese woman, Mulan was petrified by the thought of disappointing her father. She struggled to honor her family while staying true to herself, a struggle to which we can all relate.
  9. Tiana: Tiana had a restaurant to run, a dream to fulfill, and now a country to help run. All of this equals STRESS or, specifically, Acute Stress Disorder, reacting to a traumatic life event by pushing yourself beyond your limits. Hey, no pain, no gain, right?
  10. Rapunzel: After all of these new fancy, smanchy disorders, Rapunzel brings in back to basics with garden variety depression. But seriously, after being trapped in that tower and that "mother" of hers, who could blame her?
  11. Merida: Oh Merida! The fate of the world is on your shoulders. If only your mother would get off your back! Merida could totally blame her Avoidant Personality Disorder on her parents. People with avoidant personality disorder often consider themselves to be socially inept. Probably cause, like Mulan, she's torn between self-actualization. It's tough being a princess.
  12. Anna: Can you say ADHD? Anna is all kinds of awesome but home girl is all over the place! Running through the castle, swinging around poles, and crashing into horses, I'm exhausted just watching her. And last but not least,
  13. Elsa: Hiding in your room? Obsessing over what everyone else thinks? Conceal, don't feel? This is textbook Anxiety disorder (trust me; it takes one to know one). Personally, I think the ice powers are a result of trying to cope, all that ice and snow is a manifestation of her inner turmoil. Hang in there, Elsa!
